 Hydraulic Winch Installation
Installation of the Hydraulic Winch is very easy and does not require much technical know-how. Unpack everything and compare it with the inventory sheet in the booklet provided with your winch. If you have factory tow hooks get them removed.

The winch mounting kitThe mounting kit included the following components: winch, hoses, fittings, control valve, remote control, wire, circuit breaker, hook, bumper, fairlead (roller), bolts, and a black Mile Marker hat.

Before proceeding place your mounting plate on your Jeep to make sure all the holes line up properly.

Step 1 Remove the plate and mount the winch to the plate using the 4 stainless steel bolts/washers supplied with the kit. Screw the bolts in a few turns only as you don't want to torque them until after the roller fairlead is aligned.

Step 2 Flip the plate over and mount the roller fairlead using the smaller lower holes (1 on each side) and the stainless steel bolts/washers supplied with the kit. Once you have the fairlead mounted you can rotate the winch again and torque the mounting bolts. Make sure there is a rubber washer left in each hole and they haven't come off with the rubber plugs.

Step 3 Place a flat washer over each O-ring. Each washer will drop into its own groove but the fit is not tight enough to support the weight of the washer so be careful on the next step!

Step 4 This step is little tricky. You need to flip the solenoid assembly over so that the flat washers are just aligned with the rubber washers. If you flip the solenoid over the washers O-rings fall out, and if you attempt to rotate the winch motor over on top of the solenoid assembly the rubber washers on the winch motor fall out.

Once you're certain that everything is lined up as is should be, you can insert and tighten the four solenoid (control valve) assembly mounting bolts using ¼" wrench.

Mounting of the solenoid valveStep 5 Remove and save the rubber plugs from the ports of the solenoid assembly and insert the male to male connectors. The "P" port will get the elbow connector, and the "T" port will get the straight connector. Rotate the elbow connector to whatever position it needs to be for your intended hose route. If you're unsure at this point just tighten it all the way down before you screw in the straight connector into the "T" port. You will be able to unscrew it a bit to run your hose horizontally and there is an adjusting nut on the elbow to tighten it in any position.

Connecting Hydraulic Hoses

The picture shown above is without the control valve mounted. Only two hoses are used since the control valve mounts right to the winch motor.

In a Diesel Powered, rig the power steering pump also serves as a boost mechanism to the vehicle's brakes. This is commonly called a "Hydraboost System". MileMarker places the solenoid control valves into the vehicles power steering system, between the hydraboost mechanism and the steering box. Attach the new hose to the steering box leaving the fasteners loose.

Only two hoses are used since the control valve mounts right to the winch motor.

Connecting the hosesStep 6 The picture shows the hydro-booster and the new line to the winch control valve line input. The hose fitting are connected, with two 90 deg. elbows going next to the solenoids and then an angle of 45 degrees is added to help keep the sharp bend out of the hose.

Since it is almost impossible to avoid power steering fluid from spilling, you can use a drip pan to protect the garage floor.

Fastning of the control valve and mounting plateStep 7 Make sure that the Checkplate is placed in the control valve behind the hose that is fastened to the top port of the winch motor. With all lines routed and installed, wiggle the control valve into the most optimum mounting position. . Once you are satisfied, permanently fasten the control valve mounting plate and valve assembly.

Step 8 Torque all hose fittings as per specifications. Reinstall the battery and airbox tray and refill the power steering pump reservoir.

Take care that all hydraulic hose runs avoid sharp metal and plastic abrasion points. As an extra step, return to our installation after putting a few hundred miles on your vehicle to make sure that hoses have not settled into dangerous positions.

After your hoses are properly routed and all your connections are tightened correctly, top off the power steering fluid reservoir with power steering fluid which can hold up to the pressure better with out foaming. Start your engine for about five seconds and then shut it down. Top off your power steering fluid reservoir again and look for any obvious leaks.

Repeat this process as many times as necessary to stabilize the fluid level. It is a good idea to use top quality, rubber insulated hose mounting clamps to pull the hoses into protected locations.

Wiring the Solenoid

Step 9 Wiring the solenoid assembly is not at all difficult. You can use the original screws and holes and simply connect the male and female connectors and shove all the additional wiring into the hollow cross member on the front of the Jeep frame.

Before you test your winch it is advisable that you get familiar with the lever configuration. You have two levers and four possibilities:

Lever #1 FREE + Lever #2 FREE = Freespool
Lever #1 LOW + Lever #2 HIGH = Locked
Lever #1 LOW + Lever #2 FREE = Low Gear
Lever #1 FREE + Lever #2 HIGH = High Gear

Step 10 Now, it is the time to test your winch after you have preloaded you cable. If the cable spools in, remove the male and female connectors and reverse them. If the cable spools out as desired, press "In" on the remote and spool it back in.

The installed winchFree spool your cable out and connect it to a stationary object such as another vehicle or a tree with a trunk protector. Back your Jeep up just enough to tighten the cable and pull up your emergency brake lever a few clicks. You want enough tension to keep the cable taught but allow the wheels to turn. Spool in the entire spool of cable with the tension passed all the way to the hook.

On level ground using high range on the winch will have adequate force to preload the cable. The point in preloading is to prevent tight wraps from being placed over the top of loose wraps which causes kinking and ultimately weakens your cable.

Once you have taken the above precautions, your hydraulic winch is sure to give you the perfect service.
